Why Angry chiefs invoked 77 deities on UCC Vice-Chancellor

Chiefs from five Paramouncies in the Cape Coast Traditional Area, including Kwaprow, Amamoma, Akotokyir, and Kakumdo, and other protesters hit the main streets of the old town on Wednesday, broke eggs and poured libation to call on 77 gods to punish Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The chiefs say that the Vice-Chancellor is using school land for business, like putting up a gas station, a supermarket, and many other things, even though there are still problems on the land.

Dressed in red and singing war songs, the protesters held up signs asking the government to step in and solve the land boundary dispute between the community and the University of Cape Coast before it gets worse.

Some of the signs said, "UCC, give us our land," "Community lands should be registered with the Lands Commission," "We need resettlement," and "We need to agree on a common boundary."

Nana Kwesi Mensah III, the Chief of the Kwaprow community and spokesman for the angry traditional authorities, spoke to the media soon after a petition was given to the Central Regional Minister. He said that his colleagues chiefs had written to UCC and other people in power to suggest a meeting between the community elders and school authorities to talk about how to solve the problems in a peaceful way, but UCC and other people in power had not paid attention to their concerns.

“UCC authorities do not respect elders of the communities, we need resettlement or UCC authorities should co-operate to solve land boundary disputes, restrict movement of community members from one community to another, neglecting corporate social responsibilities and among others”, he demanded.
