Why lavish weddings when your party is in power? - Kwabena Agyepong quizzes

As a people, "our morals have eroded", according to Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a flagbearer candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen programme on Tuesday, the former General Secretary of the NPP said if he is elected President of Ghana, there will be a strict punishment system.

Mr Agyepong took a swipe at some public-spirited government officials, questioning why people hold extravagant weddings when their party comes to power.

"If you're advising the people to cut down on spending, then follow suit to build confidence. Not everyone can see the opulence that exists in our culture.

Why do people throw extravagant weddings when their party comes to power? You won't believe me when I tell you how many people in government are married or have been married. It's terrible.

There are certain things you don't do if you want to work for the government. Modesty is necessary if you work for the government. As politicians, we need to be measured and controlled because we have become so ostentatious. Cabinet ministers who travelled to the World Cup in Qatar to show off were terrible, he said.

According to Mr Agyapong, it's important that public servants learn to live modestly.

If given the presidency in 2024, he said, he would maintain law and order and ensure that Ghanaians behave properly.
