Here Is Why The Lands Minister Has Instructed Chairman Wontumi’s Company To Stop Mining At The Nimiri Forest Reserve

Ghana is known to be one of the luckiest countries that have natural resources, but due to some reasons, the country is finding it difficult to make use of it.

We all know Galamsey, which happens to be a way of finding gold under the ground.

Mining involves a process, but some people take it upon themselves to do it legally.

Due to this, we have seen all the major rivers in Ghana being affected by this galamsey or illegal mining.

Many Ghanaians are worried over the state of our river bodies and have asked the rightful institutions in charge to take action to avoid future damages.

Recently the lands minister has ordered chairman Wontumis’s mining company (Akonta mining limited) to stop operating in the Tano Nimiri forest in the western region.

In the statement, the mystery indicated that ‘"Akonta mining company has no mineral right to start mining in the Tano Nimiri forest reserve" and because of that, they should halt operation in that area.

They further stated that although Akonta mining company has leased some part of the area, which is outside the forest reserve.

In the statement, the ministry also directed the forestry commission to make sure Akonta mining company does not operate in the forest reserve.

The ministry continued in their statement saying that they have seen in their records that Akonta mining company has applied for a mining lease in the company but they have not approved it yet because all mining operations in the forest reserve have been suspended.

And because of this, any mining activities that will be seen inside the forest reserve are considered illegal.
