Ghana Cycling Federation will gain support from the Bahati Foundation

The Bahati Foundation, headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States, will collaborate with the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) to train and develop youth cyclists who can compete and reach the podium at major international competitions such as the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Mr. Rashid Bahati and his son Rahsaan Bahati, a former member of the United States Cycling team and former President of the South African Cycling Federation, William Newman, introduced the foundation to the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, on Wednesday, July 27.

According to Mr. Sahnoon Mohammed, Secretary General of the GCF, they have had positive discussions aimed at bolstering the cycling-loving young in Ghana by providing equipment and instruction. He stated that Ghana will gain from the implementation of exchange programmes.

Professor Twumasi congratulated and praised the Bahati Foundation for selecting Ghana, which is the gateway to Africa, and as Ghana hosts the 13th African Games in Accra, the country will receive a great deal of attention.

Also with the future in mind, specifically the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he implied that preparing young cyclists could yield the intended results.

Mr. Kwame Amponfi Jr., the Technical Director of the NSA, stated that bringing cycling to the schools and providing the proper training locally and internationally will bring out the best in those who will compete for the national team. He applauded the Bahati Foundation's proposal for an exchange programme because it would benefit Ghana's top cyclists by allowing them to train at some of the finest facilities.

Rahsaan Buhati, founder and chairman of the Foundation, whose mother is from Alabama and who began the sport at the age of 11 and has since retired from professional racing, has expressed his willingness to support the Ghana Cycling Federation.

Ten times United States champion, he now wishes to contribute back to society.

He stated that when he was competing, there were no Africans, and he wants more Africans to be among the finest when he competes at the international level in cycling because they have the ability to accomplish greater feats.

William Newman stated that it is time for Africa to flourish in the sport of cycling and take advantage of the numerous opportunities available, but they must begin somewhere.

He emphasised the need to develop structures and target the numerous Olympic medals at stake.

In the meantime, a party of Burkinabe student cyclists will travel to Ghana to initiate the partnership with the Bahati Foundation.
