A lecturer in the African studies department at Luton University has suggested that the ruling New Patriotic Party choose its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, as its running mate in order to improve the party's chances in the upcoming elections.
Dr. Effah Eghan thinks Chairman Wontumi's popularity can be the deciding factor in the NPP's triumph because it is not limited by geography, tribe, or ethnicity.
He contends that the political climate in Ghana has changed dramatically, placing a premium on widespread support and public acclaim as prerequisites for success in office.
Though his proposal is likely to be unpopular with some groups, he insists that thoughtful consideration and an unbiased assessment are required.
Dr. Effah says that it doesn't matter how people currently perceive politics, because leaders like Chairman Wontumi have the influence and power to easily sway votes in favour of their parties.
Dr. Effah, an expert on African political dynamics with a focus on elections, emphasised that Chairman Wontumi's tremendous impact on the social front from across the length and breadth of the country since entering the Ghanaian political scene makes him an ideal candidate for a key role as the running mate of the NPP.
"Go to the northern part of the country, Wontumi is hailed, come to the southern part of Ghana, he is loved and adored by all, he connects with the grassroots and has an easy influence on them," he said.
