Music Video Brouhaha: Soyinka Backs Davido Against Muslim Backslash.

Davido, a Nigerian Afrobeats musician, has received criticism for sharing a video that some Muslims found objectionable.

The video, which Davido posted to Instagram, depicted men dancing outside of a mosque.

The video went viral rapidly, and numerous Muslims were outraged.

Some protesters even tore down Davido posters. Since then, Davido has deleted the video, but the harm has already been done.

Davido has the freedom to use dance in a religious context, according to Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka. However, other prominent figures, including former lawmaker Shehu Sani and former president Muhammadu Buhari's adviser Bashir Ahmad, have condemned the video.

The content of the video, according to Ahmad, was "absolutely disrespectful, hurtful, and offensive." He stated that Muslims do not joke about their religion, particularly when it involves prayers.

Davido's manager, Israel Afeare, issued an Instagram apology for the video, which has since been deleted.

Davido and Logos Olori, the other artist in the video, have neither commented on the controversy.

The outcry against Davido highlights the sensitivity of religious issues in Nigeria. The country is home to a sizeable Muslim population, many of whom are devout. Any perceived insult to Islam can provoke retaliation.

How the controversy will affect Davido's career remains to be seen.
