RIP: She was killed on her birthday

Women and children are still forced to live in constant danger of being murdered in South Africa, where at least one woman or kid is sexually assaulted or raped every single day.

The situation has been like this for a very extended period of time. There have been many efforts made by different organizations to raise awareness about the killing of men and women, yet the killings themselves are still taking place.

Even the police had been waiting to raise awareness against gender-based violence, but their efforts appear to have been in vain because nothing has changed and, if anything, the situation is getting worse every day. Fear dominates the lives of South African women today.

Recent news reports have detailed yet another instance of a woman being brutally murdered on the day that she would have turned another year older.

Birthdays are supposed to be joyous occasions where we rejoice in the gift of life, but for the Gcobo family, they turned into days of mourning and reflection instead. Unako Gcobo, a seventeen-year-old girl from Ginsberg, Eastern Cape, was reportedly killed on her birthday, October 22.

The incident occurred in the province. Unako and her friend were walking home after a night out when they were surprised by a group of strangers who opened fire on them. In addition to this, her buddy has recently passed away. There has not been anyone brought into custody as of yet.

A day for the Gcobo family that was supposed to be one of joy and celebration ended up being one that was marred by tragedy and filled with grief.

The murder of Unako has moved the emotions of so many people that even on social media, people are pleading with the authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.

They don't even have an idea as to who might have killed her because she was just a youngster with no enemies, which makes the situation much more upsetting and sad for them.

The fact that nothing was stolen from them at the scene of the crime demonstrates that the only intent was to murder them; the offenders just killed them and then fled the area.

There are some people in this world who do not deserve to live, and I believe that the law of South Africa ought to reinstate the death sentence.

They continue to commit murders while being aware that they will be sent to jail but will eventually be released. The only answer to this never-ending cycle of murderous acts against men and women is the death penalty.
