Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku Profile

Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku is a Ghanaian politician, economist, corporate executive, a diplomat and a member of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana . He is a member of the New Patriotic Party. Dr. Apraku was the Member of Parliament for the Offinso North constituency in the fourth parliament of the fourth Republic of Ghana.

Dr. Apraku was the personal spokesman of Prof. Adu Boahen from 1991 to 1996. He was the Economic and Finance Spokesman for the NPP from 1992 to 2000.

After the 2000 elections, Dr. Apraku was appointed by H.E' President Kufuor as the Minister of Trade and Industry. He was the Minister of Regional Cooperation and NEPAD. Between 2003-2005 . He was the Chairman of ECOWAS Council of Ministers, a group that includes the Ministers in charge of Integration, Finance and Trade. He was a governor of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and
Development (EBID) from 2003 to 2006.

Dr. Apraku has had an extensive and successful professional career in both the private and public sectors.



Dr. Apraku was published in several
professional journals and done consulting work for the World Bank, USAID and the Institute for
Economic Affairs (IEA) of Ghana.
Dr. Apraku is currently a Member of the Board of Trustees of the American Field Service Cultural Organization in the United States of America.

In addition, he has acquired over the years, in-depth knowledge and understanding, as well as practical experience in dealing with critical economic issues and challenges in Africa, particularly in the areas of finance, trade, and economic policy management.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku has demonstrated a capacity for efficient and effective leadership in managing and coordinating organizational activities at high levels of executive responsibility.

Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku was born on September 7, 1954 at Akumadan in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region. Both of his parents, Akwasi Apraku and Akua Boatemaa Brenya of blessed memory were from Akumadan.

He attended his Primary and Middle Schools in Akumadan and pursued his secondary Education at the Tweneboah
Kodua Secondary School in Kumawu from
1967 -1972 and furthered his education in South Albany High School in Oregon, U.S.A. after winning an AFS International essay competition after which he studied for economics degree at the Oregon State University taking a doctorate in the subject.


AT THE MINISTRY OF REGIONAL
COOPERATION AND NEPAD

Dr. Apraku elevated ECOWAS and its Council of ministers activities to a new level when he
was the Chairman of ECOWAS Council of
ministers for 2 terms. He visited some countries with the Executive Secretary of ECOWAS to encourage them to pay the ECOWAS Levy.

At the time he took office as the Chairman of
the council, member countries to the
ECOWAS Fund contributed only 207" of the
ECOWAS budget. Through his initiative,
today Member States contribute over 65% of
the ECOWAS total budget.

Dr. Apraku elevated the NEPAD concept
from obscurity to a practical result-oriented
program, marked by the creation of NEPAD
E-schools and School Feeding Program to aid
Ghanaian children in their academic
pursuits/activities. Under his leadership,
Ghana was selected as one of the ten African
Countries to pilot the NEPAD School Feeding
Program. Upon success completion of the
pilot program, he sought, and negotiations
are near completion for $100 annual grant
from the Dutch Government to expand
national NEPAD School Feeding Program.

The School Feeding Program is part of
the Government agenda against poverty and
for increasing school enrolment and healthy
school children.

Again under his leadership, Ghana was
selected as one the 16 countries to participate
in the NEPAD e-school program. The
program has enabled beneficiary schools to
be connected to ICT technology.
Beneficiary schools include : Acherensua
Secondary School, Akumadan Secondary
School, Ola Girls Secondarv School , St. Augustine's Secondary School and many other schools.


Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku is long-standing member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Konadu has declared his interest to contest for NPP Flagbearer if nominations opens.
