Former President John Mahama sends delegation to sympathize with Prof Azumah Nelson

A delegation led by a former Minister for Youth and Sports and comprising the former GOC President and MP for Talensi, Ranking Member for the Youth, Sports and Tourism Committee of Parliament, Hon. Kobby Woyome and former Mayor of Accra and MP for Ablekuma South have, on behalf of former President John Mahama, paid a special visit to the former World Boxing Champion and legend, Prof. Zoom Zoom Azumah Nelson in his Achimota residence.

The delegation presented assorted items and an envelope as the former president's support for the performance of the funeral of the late mother of the great boxer. " President Mahama wants us to once again convey his apologies for his inability to be present physically to mourn with due to another call outside Accra. I also wish to express my joy for the reported well organised and colourful funeral, which was a fitting honour to a loving mother. Continue to be an inspiration to the younger generation as your late mother did at the beginning of your illustrious career."


The boxing hall of fame inductee expressed his appreciation for the former president and gratitude for his support in his time of sorrow. He said, " I am surprised that he has sent such a huge and respected delegation. It shows how much he respects and loves me. I thank God for His blessings and favour upon him. " He also pleaded with the delegation to lobby for more attention for the sport because Ghana abounds in talent in it. Hon. B.T. Baba and Kobby Woyome expressed their readiness to take up the challenge as their honour to the boxing professor. Hon. Oko Vanderpuije also encouraged the boxing legend not to be dispirited by the numerous frustrations that have thrown at him but must parry them away as he used to do in the ring and continue to impart his God given knowledge to the future generations.

The leader of the delegation and Sports Minister under the former President pledged the commitment of the next NDC government under John Dramani in 2025 to continue with it's Sports infrastructure development with emphasis on boxing, athletics and indoor disciplines. He pleaded with the former World Champion to be ready to play a more prominent role in the development of the new policy for boxing. Thanking the former president and the delegation on behalf of the great Azuma Nelson, Yaw Sakyi, his public relations manager, hinted at a planned national and international ceremony to highlight the achievements of the boxing hero and asked for the support of the office of the former President to make it a success.
