In a tragic incident, a 63-year-old farmer named Joseph Begyina has been sentenced to serve 10 years in prison with hard labor for the despicable act of defiling a 7-year-old girl. The Cape Coast Circuit Court in the Central Region, presided over by Judge Dorinda Smith-Arthur, convicted the accused based on his guilty plea.
Chief Inspector Gilbert Adongo, the Prosecutor, provided details of the case to the court. The victim, Esther Duodu, is a third-grade student at Nyamebekyere D/C Basic School, residing with her father, Yaw Duodu, and their family in Assin Bereku Nyamebekyere. Yaw Duodu, who is a cocoa farmer, sells local gin, which Joseph Begyina, the convicted individual, frequently purchases by walking a distance of about 500 meters.
According to the Prosecutor's account, on Saturday, April 29, around 3 pm, Joseph Begyina went to buy local gin from Yaw Duodu. After being served, Duodu asked his daughter, Esther, to watch over the drinks while he went to work on his farm. After approximately 5 minutes of work, Duodu returned to the compound to retrieve something but was unable to locate his daughter or the drinks. Concerned, he called out to Esther, who emerged from her room upon hearing her father's voice.
During the questioning, Yaw Duodu noticed Joseph Begyina exiting Esther's room, hastily zipping up his shorts. Alarmed by this sight, Duodu raised Esther's dress to investigate further and discovered that his daughter was without her pants. Disturbed by what he found, he questioned Esther, who bravely disclosed that Begyina had engaged in sexual acts with her on two occasions: once in the room and twice in the cocoa farm.
Appalled by the revelation, Yaw Duodu promptly reported the incident to the police, resulting in the arrest of Joseph Begyina. In his caution statement, the accused admitted to having sexual intercourse with Esther and pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. Esther underwent a medical examination and received necessary treatment after a medical form was issued.
Following a thorough investigation, the case was presented before the court for judgment, ultimately leading to Joseph Begyina's conviction. This serves as a grim reminder of the importance of safeguarding the well-being and innocence of our children, and the severe consequences that await those who commit such heinous acts.
