Osei KYEI Mensah Bonsu In Pole Position To Be Named Dapaah Successor

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, leader of the majority in parliament and minister of parliamentary affairs, along with two others are reportedly in a commanding position to succeed Cecilia Abena Dapaah as minister of sanitation and water resources.

Other candidates reportedly under consideration include the current Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso Boakye, and the Minister of State for Local Government and Decentralisation, Osei Bonsu Amoah.

However, according to sources, President Akufo-Addo is inclined to trust Kyei Mensah Bonsu to restore the sector's reputation following the Abena Dapaah scandal.

In 2021, when Ken Ofori-Atta was incapacitated, the Suame lawmaker served as acting minister of finance in the absence of Ken Ofori-Atta.

If Ken Ofori-Atta had been unable to continue, a number of sources had indicated that Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu could have been appointed Finance Minister.

President Akufo-Addo has entrusted Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, who is serving his final term as member of parliament for the Suame Constituency, to succeed Cecilia Abena Dapaah as his representative for the strategic sector.

On his return to Ghana from the Vatican, President Akufo-Addo is anticipated to address the shortlist, which includes the Majority Leader. A crucial consideration for the President is to appoint a candidate who may not require vetting by the appointments committee.

The dispute arose after the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, resigned in the wake of a controversy involving the alleged theft of several foreign and local currencies from her residence by her household staff.

Madam Dapaah stated in her resignation letter to the President that she decided to step down "because I do not want this matter to become a government preoccupation and a hindrance to government work at such a crucial time."

On Friday, July 21, it was revealed that two housekeepers of the Minister were facing accusations before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis in October 2022 from the former minister's residence in Abelenkpe, Accra.
