Vice President Bawumia Fingered In Gonja-Mamprusi War

The vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has allegedly been accused of interfering in the Gonja-Mamprusi conflict, which has resulted in the deaths of several people in the region, by a group of angry youth from Daboya in the Savannah Region.

Speaking to the media at a press conference held at the Northern Regional Police headquarters on Friday, June 2, 2023, when some arrested youth of Daboya were brought there, some sympathisers and youth who had gathered there leveled several allegations against the vice-president, including the use of an allegedly Dr. Bawumia-owned pickup truck by their opponents.

Soale Bruhan, who identified himself as a Daboya Gonja Youth, stated, "The town of Daboya has been invaded by police this morning in an attempt to apprehend so many innocent people. This pertains to a case involving the Gonjas and the Mamprusis tribes. At our end, where the Mamprusis reside, there is a long-standing land dispute. We have no problem with them, but they want to take it from us. Because they have been granted authority."

He added, "They are aware that a potent vice president will always support them. Conflict exists between two (2) tribes, yet only one (1) has been arrested? They have not apprehended anyone residing on Mamprusis territory. What have we done to merit this? Are Gonjas not considered Ghanaian? And the projectiles we have discovered on the ground, if not for security, are beyond the means of any civilian."

He added, "Just because Mamprusis have the support of the Vice President, they have been harassing Gonjas. We Gonja did not have a Vice President, but we did have a President, and we never attacked any ethnic group."

On Wednesday, May 31, it was reported that youth from Daboya in the North Gonja District attacked a police station to demand the release of suspects apprehended in connection with a violent clash between Gonjas and Mamprusis at Lukula.

The conflict at Lukula resulted in the death of one person and the destruction of several homes.

At dawn on June 2, 2023, the military and police were dispatched to Daboya, where they detained and brutalized the community's residents before transporting over seventy of them to the Tamale Police Headquarters.

Numerous press conferences were held on the subject, beginning with the Buipe Youth for Peace and Development.
