We Know What Will Stop Galamsey, But We’re Not Doing It - First Deputy Speaker

Joseph Osei Owusu, the first deputy speaker of parliament, asserts that if we want to combat galamsey and put an end to it for good, we will be successful.

The lawmaker who represents the people of the Bekwai constituency stated that our efforts to combat galamsey will be futile if we do not take action.

According to the member of parliament, we as a nation and as leaders are aware of the measures necessary to combat galamsey, but we are not taking them.

He was responding to statements made by some members of parliament regarding the galamsey and illegal mining on the Black Volta.

Five years ago, when galamsey had reached the Northern Region, he made his first remark about the drug.

Mr. Osei Owusu stated that if our leaders do not take the necessary steps to stop galamsey, the regular remarks before the plenary will persist.

"We can talk as much as we like; if we decide to quit, we can. If we do not take action, however, we can continue to discuss it here (in Parliament). The necessary steps are known, and if we choose to take them, we will. Until we do so, we will continue to make statements when it is your moment to speak. It is currently in the Volta region. It will then proceed to another region. I first commented on a statement from the North. This occurred four to five years ago. Now that it has reached the Volta Region, another statement will be made. When we already know what it takes to permanently halt Galamsey, we will wait until it reaches our region before making a statement, while others continue to criticise it.
