The Working conditions of teachers are poor; pay them higher than other professionals - MP

Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, claims that working conditions for teachers in Ghana are deplorable.

As a result, he has emphasised the importance of providing teachers with the best possible compensation for their efforts.

Ghanaian teachers, in his opinion, should be the professionals who receive the highest type of remuneration when compared to other professionals.

He stated that teachers should be recognised for their efforts and, more significantly, appreciated above political leaders and other professionals.

“We need to reconfigure because this is not acceptable, it is not best practice and so why are we maintaining a structure that is not going to motivate and encourage the teachers to give out their best.

“They are doing a lot already but we know they can do even better so what is holding us back as a nation, as a society in putting our money where our mouth is,” Dr Apaak said.

He was reacting to a publication which disclosed that some 10,000 teachers had left Ghana to pursue greener pastures abroad.

He said to resolve this challenge, the country must appreciate the critical role, values, and necessary contributions of teachers.

The Builsa South Constituency MP stated this in an interview on Newsfile.

The MP expressed disappointment that teachers in Ghana are facing similar economic challenges, including high inflation rates, as the rest of the population.
