18-year-old mother of two-week-old baby released from Delta prison; narrates how she was arrested after her boyfriend allegedly stole a phone

On Monday, June 26, 2023, Miss Beauty Obi, an 18-year-old mother of a two-week-old infant, was released from Warri Custodial Centre, also known as Okere Prison.

On compassionate grounds, the Chief Judge of Delta State, Honorable Justice Tessy Diai, granted the juvenile bail.

In response to an appeal from Mr. Edo Joseph Lucky, the deputy controller of the Warri Custodial Centre, Justice Dial had shown Obi, who had given birth via caesarean section, compassion.

Lucky described the pitiful circumstances of the teen mother and her partner, who were admitted to the Custody Centre while she was pregnant.

According to the deputy controller of the Custodial Centre, when Beauty was due to give birth, she was transported to the Warri Central Hospital, where she gave birth via caesarean section.

However, the infant was deposited in an incubator for one week before it was reunited with its mother in custody.

Lucky also disclosed that the prison administration was spending N1,000 per hour on the child's incubator care for one week, which, he said, informed his appeal to the Chief Judge to grant her bail so she could return to her parents for appropriate care.

The Chief Judge, who generously assisted Beauty Obi with the sum of N20,000, granted her bail in the amount of N250,000 with one surety in the same amount.

The surety, who must reside within the trial court's jurisdiction, must also submit an affidavit of means and his national identification card NIN number.

According to the teen mother from Obingwa, Imo State, she and her lover were arrested at a location where he was about to sell a stolen phone.

The adolescent mother, whose mother is from Kwale in the Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, stated that she knew her boyfriend had stolen the phone.
