Ahafo Region records 10 maternal deaths in first half of 2023; Minister expresses concern

The Ahafo Regional Minister, George Boakye, has expressed concern on the high number of incidents of maternal mortality that were documented in the region during the first half of 2023.

He has requested that the Regional Health Directorate increase the amount of effort that it is putting in to address this worrying trend.

During the meeting in Goaso that was organized to review the mid-year performance of the Ahafo Regional Health Directorate in 2023, the Minister expressed his worry.

He pointed out that despite the dedicated efforts of healthcare personnel, the region has experienced a considerable increase in the number of maternal fatalities compared to the same period last year, which is very worrying. He said this in reference to the fact that the same period last year had the same number of deaths.

Mr. Boakye emphasized how urgent the situation is by pointing out that the reported numbers for maternal deaths in the first half of this year are disturbing. He also noted that the severity of the problem was emphasized by him.

He strongly asked the Regional Health Directorate to strengthen its policies and actions in order to successfully combat the rising prevalence of maternal mortality.

Dr. Kwabena Boakye Boateng, who serves as the Ahafo Director for the Ghana Health Service, has expressed concerns that are similar to those expressed by the Minister.

Despite the efforts of those who work in healthcare, he admitted in an interview with Adom News that there is still a significant problem with maternal mortality in the Ahafo Region.

Dr. Boateng said that while the region recorded three cases of maternal deaths during the first six months of the previous year, the number has grown to ten cases for the same period this year. This is a significant increase from the previous year's initial three occurrences.

He said that the Directorate is in the process of carrying out an exhaustive investigation at the present time in order to determine the factors that are contributing to this surge and to devise specific strategies for preventing it.

It is clear that the Ahafo Regional Health Directorate is dedicated to finding a solution to this urgent problem, as evidenced by the fact that they are working hard to guarantee that every mother in the region has access to high-quality medical treatment and has a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
