Be Cautious About How You Insult National Peace Council Members - Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi

Accra, April 19, GNA – Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, chairman of the National Peace Council, has stated that the public should exercise restraint when insulting members of the organization.

This time, the public should be informed that Council work is not compensated. No member of the Peace Council is compensated financially.

Due to the fact that the Peace Council is comprised of eminent individuals who serve society, the manner in which they are insulted or disparaged should be viewed with caution.

Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi stated this when the Council convened with representatives of various political parties in Accra's Osu to discuss the use of hate speech and other indecent expressions.

He lamented that in the majority of cases, the media provided a forum for harassment.

The National Peace Council has observed that the phenomenon of hate speech and indecent forms of expression has exploded in recent years, and that this trend is more prevalent during election years.

According to him, the Council was awake and its members were working diligently to assure the country's peace.

He stated that there were 292 cases pending before the Council, 112 of which involved chieftaincy issues, so the Council was engaged in a variety of activities.

He explained that the Council did not only deal with political issues, adding that the council had convened with the leadership of the National Democratic Congress, the New Patriotic Party, a member of the GPRTU, and market women to discuss vigilantism.

"We are actively engaged in the Bawku issues, and we have conducted discussions with leaders in various hotspots across the nation. In addition to training on jihadists in the north, we have also discussed maritime piracy with fishermen in Ada and Elmina, among others.

"Yet it is said that the Peace Council is sleeping and that they only emerge to speak when there are elections."
