In Ghana, each vehicle has a unique identification number. These identifying identifiers are printed on the license plates of each vehicle.

The distinct numbers are assigned based on certain criteria, such as the date of registration, the registration region, and the type of vehicle. These unique numbers, such as GT, CR, AS, and the rest, designate the region in which the vehicle was registered.

There are no regional restrictions on the use of license plates in Ghana. A vehicle registered in the Ashanti Region, for instance, may be driven in the Brong-Ahafo Region. The vehicle license plates include a two-letter region code, a four-digit numeric code, and a two-digit year code.

The two-letter region code indicates the region where the vehicle was registered; the four-digit numeric code is the only distinguishing feature on a Ghanaian license plate; the numerals indicate the number of vehicles registered in the region where the vehicle was registered. In addition, the year code indicates the exact year the vehicle was registered.

Four of Ghana's ten regions, Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Upper East, and Upper West, lack the letter 'R' in their region codes.

Following are some codes for Ghana's numerous regions:

AS, AE, AW, etc. - Ashanti Region

BA et al. - Brong-Ahafo

CR, etc – Central Region

ER, etc– Eastern Region

NR and so on - Northern Region

UE, and so forth — Upper East

UW, etc – Upper West

VR, etc – Volta Region

WR, etc – Western Region

Greater Accra region. GR, GC, GE, GL, GM, GN, GT, GS, GW, GY, GX.

Ashanti Region and Greater Accra have multiple letters due to the massive influx of automobile registrations in those regions. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has provided them with supplemental letters.
