Dam Spillage: Bawumia donates GH¢160,000 to displaced victims

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a personal payment of GH160,000 to victims of the terrible Akosombo Dam spillage.

The leakage has drowned several settlements in eight districts, predominantly in the Volta Region, as well as the Eastern and Greater Accra areas, displacing thousands.

Dr. Bawumia made the donation during a visit to some of the Volta Region's impacted areas on Wednesday, October 17 to support the victims.

So far, the government has responded by evacuating affected people to 20 holding centers and providing emergency relief items through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Inter-Ministerial Committee established on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's instructions to manage the disaster.

Dr. Bawumia's personal donation, it was claimed, is meant to supplement the government's assistance to displaced victims.

While expressing his condolences, the Vice President also informed victims that the government is not only committed to providing emergency measures, but also to restoring the livelihoods of those impacted.

"I see so much sadness in the eyes of our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers who are seated here." "What has happened has turned their lives upside down," Dr. Bawumia explained.

"These are people who were going about their normal daily duties to take care of themselves, but now they have to rely on others for a living, which saddens me."

"I want to assure you that the government will do everything possible to assist the affected people in providing relief and restoring their livelihoods."

"We are not only looking at temporary relief, we are also looking at a more sustained support through the Inter Ministerial Committee, so that those affected can restore their livelihoods."

The Vice President visited New Bakpa in the Central Tongu District, as well as Sogakope and Sokpoe in the South Tongu District.

Interior Minister Ambrosse Dery, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Volta Region Minister Dr Archibald Letsa, and officials from NADMO and the Volta River Authority (VRA) joined the Vice President.
