Election 2024: 5 reasons why Dr. Bawumia may become president

Today, June 16, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made the official filing of his nomination to compete in the National Patriotic Party presidential primaries, which are scheduled to take place on November 4th, 2023.

The big picture: Dr. Bawumia, along with other contenders including the former general secretary of the party Kwabena Agyepong, the former minister of energy Boakye Agyarko, and the former minister of trade and industry Alan Kyeremanten, is working toward the goal of becoming the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the elections that will take place in 2024.

Why it matters: The main opposition party, the NDC, is running former President John Mahama as its candidate to seize political power away from the NPP in the 2024 elections. This promises to make the elections a highly intriguing spectacle. As the competition to become the NPP's standard-bearer heats up, it appears like Dr. Bawumia will emerge as the front-runner.

If he can pull off a victory in November's midterm elections, he has a decent probability of repeating as president in 2024 for the following five reasons.

1. Popularity

As Dr. Bawumia submits his nomination documents, he receives support from dozens of individuals.
In 2008, Dr. Bawumia was first seen on the political landscape as a result of President Nana Akufo-Addo's decision to select him as his running partner for the presidential election. At the time, Dr. Bawumia was serving as a deputy governor at the Bank of Ghana. It was obvious that he was relatively inexperienced in politics; yet, after working with Nana Addo for two election cycles, Ghanaians witnessed a new Dr. Bawumia emerge right in front of their eyes. This time, he was self-assured, intelligent, charming, and had a sense of humor that won over the hearts of all of his audience members. Then, he demonstrated his expertise of the economics through his lectures on the economy sessions, and a lot of people feel that it was actually Dr. Bawumia who won the 2016 elections for the NPP. In terms of marketability, he has already had more than a decade of head start thanks to his current position as vice president, which makes his chances look better heading into the elections in 2024.

2. The objective of the opposition
One might make the case that Dr. Bawumia has been a constant source of trouble for the NDC for a number of years at this point. As a direct consequence of this, he is now the primary focus of the party. In the contest for the NPP flagbearer, for example, you won't find the opposition party attending to what the other contenders have to say about the economy, but the NDC does pay attention to what Dr. Bawumia has to say. In addition to the fact that he is the Vice President, they consider him to be the most formidable opponent they will face in the elections of 2024.

3. Religion

When it comes to the electability of a presidential candidate in Ghana, religion has always been a factor, regardless of whether or not this fact is acknowledged. There has always been an effort made to ensure that the president and vice president come from different religious backgrounds. If Dr. Bawumia is successful in his bid to become the party's flagbearer, it will mark the first time in history that a Muslim has served as the leader of a major political party. Believe that he will most likely receive the majority of the votes from the population of Muslims, since this will have a significant influence on his prospects of winning.

4. Age

Goosie Tanoh is getting back into the race for the NDC; he picked up his nomination form on Saturday.
Have you encountered the viewpoint that the current order, which should be replaced by a new one, should be overthrown? In other words, it's high time for the younger generation to seize control. One of the youngest people to run for president, Dr. Bawumia will be one of the youngest candidates overall. And if the kids are serious about bringing up the next generation of leaders, then perhaps this is the time to seize the chance.

5. Background in terms of the economy

At this juncture in Ghana's developmental stage, the country requires the services of an economist to guide it through these difficult times. In both the 2016 and 2020 elections, Dr. Bawumia's extensive knowledge of the economy proved to be an invaluable advantage. However, throughout the course of the last three years, the nation has seen a precipitous economic decline, reaching the point where it is in dire need of a rescue by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Given the current situation of the economy under Dr. Bawumia's watch, the issue that deserves an answer worth a million dollars is: why should Ghanaians trust Dr. Bawumia's economic prowess at this time? He has a lot of people to persuade, but if he can get the voting populace on board with what he plans to do differently as the guy in command of the country, then his chances of winning may be improved. He has a lot of people to convince.
