Failed abortion kills 12-year-old girl at Ellembelle

A unsuccessful abortion attempt resulted in the untimely death of a young girl who was living in the town of Telekubukazo, which is located in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region. The girl was 12 years old.

It is stated that the young girl, whose name has been provided as Augustina Gabriel, was declared dead as soon as she arrived at the St. Martin de Porres Hospital in Eikwe.

Ellembelle Social Welfare Officer Jonas Kabutey, who verified the story to a sit-in presenter on Connect FM's Omanbapa Wofa Ato, revealed that they suspect the young girl died following an unsuccessful attempt to abort her five-month-old baby. The young girl was pregnant at the time of her death.

"We suspect that she took medicine that was not prescribed to her in order to end the pregnancy that had been going on for five months, but she began having issues and had to be brought to Esiama Hospital, where she was given First Aid. Even before she was taken there, the hospital saw that the placenta had already been delivered successfully. It was clear that her condition was deteriorating, so they took her to the St. Martin de Porres Hospital in Eikwe. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead as soon as she arrived there, he explained.

He goes on to say that when the deceased young girl was only 11 years old, she began a romantic involvement with a man in the neighborhood who was 21 years old.

He goes on to say that the young girl's parents were aware of the relationship, and that they were aware of the fact that their deceased daughter frequently spent the night at the residence of her boyfriend.

"She began having an affair with the boy when she was eleven years old, and it has progressed to the point where the girl sometimes spends the night at the residence of her boyfriend. Her parents, both of whom are herbalists, were aware of the scenario, and they gave their blessing to it since they stood to gain financially from the relationship," he went on to say.

Mr. Karbutey, who also works as a paralegal for the Western Region, stated that the district is rife with cases of this nature and urged local organizations to lend support by maintaining a program of ongoing education.

"These problems are extremely common in the Ellembelle District, and when they do occur, the parents choose not to report the incident." They receive money from the accused and then allow the case to continue without further investigation. To assist us in gaining control of the situation, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other organizations' participation is required. On a number of these topics, the residents of Ellembelle need to receive a substantial amount of education from us. Since we offer free education, it is unclear to us why parents in the Ellembelle District would consent to their daughters spending time with male companions rather than in the classroom, as he pointed out.

He goes on to say that his office has extended an invitation to the boy who is responsible for the pregnancy so that he can be questioned.
