Ghana’s economy has moved from ICU heading to the morgue – Alex Segbefia

Alex Segbefia, a former minister of health, has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for its handling of the economy thus far.

He believes that the administration has handled the economy poorly.

The economy under the Akufo-Addo administration, as previously stated by former president John Dramani Mahama, was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Speaking on the Big Issue on TV3 on Tuesday, May 23, Mr. Alex Segbefia, who is also the Director of International Relations for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claimed that it has left the intensive care unit and that "the economy is close to the morgue."

He added that the World Bank had given Ghana $1 billion under Covid, but the Akufo-Addo administration did not see it to be sufficient.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is currently has also approved $3 billion for three years to support Ghana.

In his view, the only difference between the IMF’s bailout and the $ 1 billion support from the World Bank is that, with the Fund’s programme, there is going to be direct supervision on the utilization of the cash.
