Hundreds Displaced By Tsunamis, and Agorkedzi Schools Closed

Hundreds of residents of Agorkedzi in the Anloga District of the Volta Region were displaced by tidal surges caused by heavy rainfall in the area.

Mr. Raphael Agbanavor, the area's Assemblyman, told the Ghana News Agency that residents of Agorkedzi and surrounding areas have lost their means of subsistence due to tidal waves, and that immediate measures must be taken to provide some solace to the victims.

According to him, the tidal surges became severe on Sunday afternoon, causing the destruction of numerous structures and personal belongings.

Some of the victims were evacuees from Fuveme Township who were affected by last year's storm surges.

"The only elementary school in the region, which had been relocated from Fuveme to Agorkedzi, was flooded. We were forced to close the school because teaching and learning could not continue under these conditions, he explained.

He pleaded with the government and other charitable individuals to assist them.

Mr. Philip Bokorvi, director of the National Disaster Management Organisation for Anloga, reported to the GNA that 420 people were displaced and 85 homes were flooded.

"This is the third time this has occurred here, and the immediate action required to save lives is to relocate these individuals to a safer location," he said.

It is inappropriate to retain students in the school because we do not know what will occur.

Mr. Bokorvi stated that the sea level continues to rise, and the higher it rises, the more hazardous it becomes.

He urged the victims and residents of Agorkedzi Community to consider relocating to Atiteti, the closest municipality, which was located away from the ocean.

However, when contacted, Mr. Seth Yormewu, the Anloga District Chief Executive, urged the victims to remain tranquil and relocate to safer grounds while the Assembly worked to rectify the situation.
