Minority to hit streets Sept. 5 to demand BoG Governor’s resignation

As part of an increased campaign to compel the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his two deputies to resign from their positions, the Minority in Parliament has selected Tuesday, September 5 as the date for a march to the main office of the Bank of Ghana.

After posting a loss of GH60.8 billion in 2022, the Members of Parliament (MPs) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) gave Dr. Ernest Yedu Addison and the two Deputy Governors – Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Addo Awadzi – 21 days to resign from their positions.

On Monday, August 21, the Leader of the Minority Party, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, sent a letter to the Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service informing them of the plan to "occupy" the Bank of Ghana.

According to the letter that the Minority sent out, the objective of this demonstration is to "express our revulsion against the illegal printing of money (about GH80 billion) between 2021 and 2022 by BoG for the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government," which resulted in a hyperinflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022.

After some time had passed, the caucus issued the following statement: "We are further protesting the many acts of financial malfeasance by the Governor, his Deputies, and Directors of the Bank of Ghana as contained in the 2022 Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Bank."

On the day of the demonstration, those participating will congregate in the front of Parliament.

They will begin their march at the Osu Cemetery and proceed through the Ministry of Finance, the High Court Complex, Kinbu, Makola, Rawlings Park, and Opera Square before finally arriving at the Central Bank.

"The protest march will come to an end at the frontage of the Bank of Ghana, where we shall be picketing in order to demand the immediate resignation of the Governor, Deputy Governors, and Board of Directors of the Bank."
