Presbyterian Church of Ghana elects Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye as next Moderator

Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye will take over as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana after the church's 23rd General Assembly (GA) elected him to the position.

The Reverend Dr. Opare Kwakye is a professor of Church History at the University of Ghana. He possesses a PhD in the subject.

At the nomination stage of the 23rd General Assembly, the GA Presbytery Chairperson received 119 out of a total of 276 votes, which represents 52 percent of the total.

Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong came in third place with 22 votes, representing 9.6 percent of the total, while Rev. Dr. Seth Kissi came in second with 54 votes, representing 23.6 percent of the total.

This caused the second and third candidates to withdraw from the race, which allowed the General Assembly to vote "Yes" or "No." The results of the voting showed that Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye received 270 "Yes" votes, with only 6 "No" votes constituting 3% of the total.

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana's General Assembly has elected Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye to serve as the 19th Moderator of the Assembly.

On the first Friday of December in 2023, he will officially begin his duties, succeeding Rev. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante in this role.
