Restore Criminal Clearance Services Unit to Police CID Headquarters - Officers Petition the IGP

Igp Dampare
According to information gathered, the Ghana Police Service has hired a civilian photographer to take over the clearance section of the service, which conducts criminal background checks on individuals who wish to be employed by an organization or who are leaving the country and require police clearance.

Prior to this configuration, the clearance section of the Ghana Police Service was located within the CID headquarters.

Upon assuming the position of CID Director, she relocated the section to the Police Intelligent Professional Standard Bureau in Nima.

The Police Clearance section conducts criminal background checks on visa applicants and non-residents for immigration purposes. It is a background check performed at the CID headquarters to determine whether a document issued is authentic.

In addition, it has been determined that the police clearance section was managed by a professional photographer recruited by the Ghana Police Service.

The handing over of the section to a civilian photographer has been criticized by some police personnel, who view the action as detrimental to the efficient operation of the police department and a threat to national security.
According to some officers with whom we spoke, the occurrence is a large-scale plot against the stability of the country, and the fact that the Ghana Police Service delegates the clearance section to a civilian photographer is a poor sign.

"The plan lacked safeguard and compliance mechanisms," an anonymous officer stated.
They also asserted that the CID Director achieved this objective by sowing disorder and instability in the country, as her actions weakened the police force, the integrity of the profession, and its credibility.

"It is not in accordance with police rules and regulations to have hired a civilian photographer to check the criminal backgrounds of individuals, as is the case today." This is improper. The police no longer perform as we anticipate them to perform. The disgruntled officers appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the IGP to halt this action and restore the sections to their original unit.

The Ghana Police Service has decentralized criminal clearance services throughout the nation.

Previously, individuals seeking criminal clearance could only do so at the CID Headquarters in Accra; however, they can now do so in any of the country's 25 Police regions.
