State-of-the-art workshop opened by Port of Takoradi

The Port of Takoradi continues to devise and implement well-tailored and targeted measures aimed at establishing amicable relationships with its stakeholders, particularly the communities that reside in its operational areas.

Beyond the wish to foster a good relationship, these initiatives are also designed to be in strategic alignment with the distinctive economic characteristics of these communities that border the Port of Takoradi operations.

To demonstrate these commitments, the Port of Takoradi inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility for the Ghana Inshore Fishermen Association (GIFA) in New Takoradi, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Western Region.

The new workshop, which will be used to repair boats and other fishing accessories, includes a tools/changing room, machine and electrical shop, a wrench to help pull boats for repairs, and administrative offices for the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MOFAD) and Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association (GIFA).

It is envisaged that the workshop will become the epicentre and heartbeat of all fishing activities, not only for fishers of New Takoradi but for all fishers along the coast of Ghana who will need a place, fitted with the essential modern technologies, to repair and maintain their fishing equipment.

Peter Amo-Bediako, the director of the Port of Takoradi, stated that the construction of the workshop was motivated by a desire to enhance the standard of living of locals.

"We wish only the best for New Takoradi and our other host communities. As fishing is the predominant economic activity in the area, we will continue to support your success in this endeavor. We will only request your cooperation and supplication for the Port's growth so that we have the financial means to continue enhancing your financial standing.

"You have already demonstrated and proven that you are a decent neighbor. I recall when the Port was required to build a new jetty. We had very fruitful interactions with you, and the result is this gorgeous and historic jetty. And New Takoradi must be pleased because you contributed to this once-in-a-lifetime achievement."

Eric Kofi Otoo, a representative of GIFA, stated, "The workshop will increase productivity and reduce the burden on fishermen, who must travel long distances to the old workshop "Boatase" to perform maintenance at odd hours..."

Director of the Fisheries Commission Mrs. Hannah Agyei-Boakye praised Port of Takoradi for the initiative.

Minister of the Western Region Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah remarked that the new machine shop at Boatase could not have come at a better moment, given how dilapidated the old machine shop had become.

Therefore, in order to help maintain this new one, we must begin to consider paying some commercial fees.

He urged the Port of Takoradi administration to expedite Phase Two of the project.

Chief of New Takoradi Nana Kwesi Abaka 1 commended Port of Takoradi for the project and urged beneficiary fishers to "watch how you conduct your business there and be particular about maintenance for this project to last longer as this will encourage the Port to do more"
