E/R: COHBS Holds 2023 CONFERENCE

The 2023 Eastern Regional Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) was held on 15th December, 2023 with a call on head teachers to set new goals and harness all the opportunities available to meet the changing trends in basic schools education.

The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs Ivy Asantewa Owusu, said children of today has different attitudes from those of the 19th and 20th centuries, and to ensure quality education, there is the need to devise means of meeting the challenges posed by children of the 21st Century.

"I want Eastern Region to be on top of education when it comes to basic education in the country. support me so that we can get good and better results in basic education. If every region is to fail let Eastern Region be on top with better results". Mrs Ivy Asantewa Owusu said.

Mrs Ivy Asantewa Owusu urged the headteachers to take very good care of their teachers because they are there to help them achieve their aims and added that heads should avoid autocratic leadership to improve quality education.




The conference, on the theme: “ elevating basic education, the role of stakeholders ,” was attended by head teachers from all the Districts in the regions.



She said education had remained the single most powerful tool for the development of nations of the world and that was why the government is committed to bost basic education to the extent of giving out free shs and its annual budget to education in order to provide the manpower and logistics while the schools provided a conducive environment for learning.


The special guest of honor who is the secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers ( GNAT) Mr. Peter D. Kpakpo-Atsem, advised the head teachers to explore all opportunities to support the children to give their best instead of criticising them all the time and at times calling them all sorts of names, stressing that conferences such as the ongoing one, provided a unique opportunity for members to meet and share ideas and strategize to improve basic education in the country.

Dr Peter D. Kpakpo said the role of the head teacher is to be a leader and not a manager, with a vision to direct teachers towards that goal of improving standards of education, and to move schools forward.
