New Juaben South Municipal Education Directorate Celebrates Girls Child Day With Female Students


This year's International Day of the Girl Child has been observed by the New Juaben South Municipal Education Directorate led by the Municipal Director of Education Mustapha Haruna Appiah.

On 19th December , 2011 the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 as the International Day of the Girl Child to recognize girls right and the unique challenges girls face around the World.

To celebrate the event this year, the New Juaben South Municipal Education Directorate decentralized the celebration to the circuit level where all female students converged in one school in order to enable many female students attend the program to observe the International Day of the Girl Child.

The celebration commenced with a float led by female teachers and accompanied by female students who held in their hands placards with the inscriptions "girls can change the world, Let's amplify girls voice, women and girls can change the world, respect girls right , end girls child marriages" etc through some communities in the New Juaben South Municipality.



Addressing the students at Ada Kyerematen M/A Basic School in Koforidua on the theme "Invest in the Girls Right: Our leaders , Our Wellbeing" , the Girl Child Coordinator in the municipality Mrs. Getrude Nsiah said "when we empower girls through education we invest in the very heart of our society, nurturing leaders and safeguarding the well-being of all".



"Girls Education is not just a matter of policy or economics , it is a matter of human right , it is the fundamental right for every girl to have access to quality education regardless of her background or circumstances".



She stress further that "educated girls are more likely to make informed decisions about their health, delayed marriage and childbirth and reducing maternal mortalities".



Finally, Mrs. Getrude Nsiah admonished women and girls to advocate for policies and initiatives that promote gender equality in education.

On his part, the Director of Education for New Juaben South Mustapha Haruna Appiah entreated the girl child to develop self confidence and learn hard to pursue professions that society perceived as male related professions since women and girls are also capable of becoming doctors, lawyers, directors , engineers , teachers, bank managers, parliamentarians or even presidents of nations.
