Wassa Amenfi East MP Visits Communities Affected By Floods Following Heavy Rains

The Member of Parliament for Wassa Amenfi East in the Western Region of Ghana, Hon. Nicholas Amankwah, has paid a visit to some areas in his Municipality affected by floods following heavy rains last week.

Several residents of water-logged areas in Wassa Amenfi East have decried the destruction of properties and livelihoods caused by incessant flooding in Wassa Akropong, the Municipal capital of the Western Region.

The devastation caused by the flood carried the MP to visit areas including Akropong-China Market, Farmers and Christ Apostolic Church to gather a first hand information about the havoc the rain have caused.

The purpose was also to express his solidarity and suggest a permanent solution to mitigate the phenomenon from occuring.

Some of the affected residents who narrated the incident to the MP attributed the incessant flood to the inadequate drainage system, clogged drainages and canals, and buildings constructed on waterways.

While many residents of the heavily flooded areas have relocated, some remained despite the hurdle, attributing their stay to financial constraints.



According to them, geographically, Akropong is a low-lying area and sometimes prone to flooding.



They added that although gutters have been constructed to help with the easy flow of water, however some residents still dump refuse into the gutters choking them.

To this end, the member of Parliament who popularly known as Home Boy therefore, entreated the residents to stop that practice and use the refuse dump provided to dispose of their rubbish.

Home Boy warned the residents against building in flood prone areas which has always caused flooding in the municipality.

Adding that it was becoming difficult to control flooding within the Amenfi East due to the attitude of some persons who continue to build in unauthorized places, blocking natural paths of flash floods during rainfall.

Meanwhile, he also assured them that desilting work on the choked gutters will begin soon.
