'Onion, Tomato market in front of Mahama's House' - Unbelievable! : Henry Quartey Exclaims

Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey has attacked the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra for their weak performance in addressing issues of indiscipline within the city. Quartey stated that the MMDCEs in Accra should be held accountable for their ineffectiveness.
He observed that as a result of such poor performance, someone had set up a tomato and onion market in front of the private residence of the former President John Mahama within the La Dadekotopon constituency.

Mr. Quartey had launched a programme called "Let's Make Greater Accra Work," with the objective of making Accra a more orderly and secure city. As part of this campaign, he had enacted policies that addressed issues related to traffic indiscipline, sanitation, and safety.

The condition of the city has worsened over the last two years, as seen by the ongoing presence of rubbish on streets and roads, as well as the continued operation of tricycles on main routes. In spite of these efforts, the programme has not been successful in meeting its objectives over the course of the past two years.

During a meeting with the MMDCEs, Mr. Quartey voiced his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the Greater Accra Region and questioned the efficiency and commitment of individuals currently filling these positions. He expressed his discontent with the current state of affairs in the Greater Accra Region. The minister called attention to a number of specific issues, such as the incessant presence of freight tricycles on the road, the loading of unlicensed commercial minivans close to the Accra Mall, and the accumulation of garbage in and around important places such as Korle Klottey, AMA, Kinbu, and Tudu, which has not been addressed.

Mr. Quartey stressed the importance of officials doing a self-assessment and drew attention to conditions that are deteriorating, such as the accumulation of waste at Agbobloshie, despite previous efforts to clear the area.

He went on to highlight the continued difficulties in locations such as Ledzokuku, La Dede Kotopon, Ashaiman, Tema West, and Ayawaso Wuogon, as well as the unexpected existence of a street vendor selling onions and tomatoes close the residence of the former president of Ghana, John Mahama, in La Dade Kotopon.

"Have we been putting in a lot of effort when the aboboyaa [freight tricycles] are still out there? Is it a laborious process? Trotros, which are similar to minivans used for transportation, are still loading up outside Accra Mall. The area around Graphic road is littered with trash. "rubbish" in AMA, Kinbu, Tudu, and everywhere else.

"I want us to make some notes about ourselves. The area formerly known as Agbogbloshie is now used as a dump. Even when we cleaned up the area, other people are still throwing trash there. That does not particularly excite me at all. Ashaiman, Tema West, Ledzokuku, and La Dedekotopon are included in this area. We were discussing aboboyaa when we were driving on the highway; they are still using the highway. It's similar to Ayawaso Wuogon and Accra Mall, for example. at point of fact, somebody has started selling onions and tomatoes at La Dadekotopon, right in front of the house where former President John Mahama once resided. "Unbelievable," was the word he used.
