Confusion Surrounds Majority Caucus Decision on Swearing-In of Assin North MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson

The Majority Caucus in Ghana is facing a dilemma regarding whether to attend or boycott the swearing-in ceremony of James Gyakye Quayson, the MP-elect for the Assin North Constituency.

This uncertainty arises despite formal statements from the President of the Republic and leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as the party's General Secretary, congratulating Quayson and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their resounding victory in the Assin North by-election.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is scheduled to administer the oath of office to James Gyakye Quayson on July 4, 2023. Quayson emerged as the winner of the Assin North by-election, which took place on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

According to the Electoral Commission's announcement, James Gyakye Quayson secured a total of 17,245 votes, representing an impressive 57.56% of the total votes cast. This victory solidified his position as the elected representative of the Assin North Constituency.

However, within the Majority Caucus, a contentious debate has ensued regarding the participation of its members in the swearing-in ceremony. The internal divisions stem from differing perspectives on the eligibility of James Gyakye Quayson to hold public office due to the ongoing criminal trial he faces, involving charges of perjury and deceiving a public officer. Some members of the Majority Caucus argue that attending the ceremony would imply an endorsement of Quayson's legitimacy, while others believe it is necessary to respect the democratic process and maintain the integrity of parliamentary proceedings.

The confusion within the Majority Caucus is noteworthy, especially considering the formal statements issued by high-ranking NPP officials congratulating Quayson and acknowledging the NDC's victory in the by-election. These statements seemingly indicate a recognition of Quayson's electoral success and the need for cooperation across party lines for the smooth functioning of parliamentary affairs.

As the swearing-in ceremony approaches, all eyes are on the Majority Caucus to observe the final decision regarding their participation. The outcome will not only shape the dynamics within the Caucus but will also have implications for parliamentary unity and the broader political landscape in Ghana.
