John Mahama pays his own electricity bills - ECG Boss confirms

Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama has revealed that former president John Dramani Mahama still pays his electricity bills from his own pocket.

According to him, he has engaged the Chief of Staff to ensure the state absorbs his bills as that is supposed to be the case as part of his benefits as an ex-president.

He detailed that, the response from the Chief of Staff is positive and he believes the situation will change in due course.
Speaking in Kokroko Show on Peace FM he said “…we have the electricity bill of Former President Kufour, we gave it to the chief of Staff and we have worked on it.
“We also got that of former president John Mahama, I pray no one should politicise this, we got in touch with Mahama and he is already paying his own electricity bills. So we are having a conversation so that his bills will be absorbed. We have spoken to the Chief of Staff and she has told is what to do, our duty is to go read his meter and know much he has exhausted and get back to the Chief of Staff.”

In 2022, John Dramani Mahama revealed that he had been denied benefits due him as an ex-president.

In an interview, he said the only payment made by the government to him was in 2013 and has not received any ex-gratia to date.

He added that he pays for everything by himself including water, electricity, rent, fuel, medical and air tickets for travel.

"No ex-gratia, I was paid 230,000 as salary arrears in 2013.

"Later, if you want we can call a group of you journalists, of course, I don't want to publish my bank statement but I can put it before you and you can look through all the payments and see if there is a 14 million cedi payment. I didn't receive any such payment," Mr. Mahama said.
