A/R: Chiefs perform rituals over desecration of cemetery

In response to the desecration of the Emena Cemetery in the Ashanti Region, traditional authorities from the Oforikrom Municipality took action according to a report by OTEC FM. Seeking to prevent negative consequences for the community, the chiefs conducted purification rituals. This initiative was prompted by a private developer who, under the pretext of a court order, damaged the cemetery while preparing to construct a building on July 6, 2023. The disturbance resulted in the exhumation of some bodies, causing distress among residents.

Approximately a month after this incident, the community experienced a series of unexplained deaths, leading to suspicions that the absence of the rituals had brought about these tragedies. Responding to the concerns voiced by the local youth, the chiefs performed special purification rites on August 16, 2023, in order to appease the gods at the cemetery. Abusuapanin Kwabena Boateng, speaking on behalf of the community after the rituals, urged calm and stated that the gods had shown signs of acceptance. He reassured that the township would not suffer any ill omens.

Hon Kenneth Owusu Bediako, the Assembly Member of the Area, conveyed that the burial ban had been lifted following the rituals. However, he emphasized the necessity for individuals seeking to engage with the cemetery to first consult the community's chiefs for proper guidance. He underlined that, according to records from both the Municipal Assembly and the chiefs, the land in question remained designated as a cemetery. Residents were urged to treat it as such and respect its significance.
