Never Get Married If You Are Smart: Oliver Barker-Vormawor

In a recent Facebook post on July 30, 2023, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convenor for #FixTheCountry movement in Ghana, sparked controversy with his advice suggesting that unmarried individuals should avoid getting married before the age of forty or even consider avoiding marriage altogether.

His post received mixed reactions from his followers, with some agreeing with his suggestion, while others felt confused and sought further explanation to make an informed decision.

The conventional wisdom has often advocated for marrying young and starting a family early to fulfill parental responsibilities before retirement or reduced physical strength. However, Barker-Vormawor's perspective challenges this notion, likely influenced by factors such as the prevalence of failed marriages, the impact of traumatic experiences from others' broken unions, the financial burden of weddings and dowries, and other concerns that make marriage appear daunting to many young people.

Interestingly, the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) report reveals that a significant number of people in Ghana have experienced separation or dissolution of their marriages. Specifically, 405,090 individuals separated from their spouses, and 553,065 had their marriages dissolved, as reported through interviews conducted during the 2021 PHC from June 27 to August 15, 2021.

In conclusion, Oliver Barker-Vormawor's advice has triggered discussions around the traditional views on marriage, with the realities of failed unions and financial burdens impacting young people's perceptions of matrimony. The situation highlights the need for further dialogue and understanding of the complexities surrounding marriage in contemporary society.
