Tragedy Strikes as Two female illegal miners die in galamsey pit

Tragically, two suspected female illegal miners have lost their lives as a result of a deep mining pit collapse in Bonsukwaada, near Atwima Mfensi, a farming community in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased individuals have been identified by the Abuakwa Divisional Police as Safia Moro, aged 40, and Vivian Kyei, who is believed to be 33 years old.

According to reports, the two miners were prospecting for gold in the pit when it suddenly caved in and trapped them. The incident happened on March 24, 2023, at around 3 pm and was reported to the police, who quickly responded to the accident scene.

Committee Chairman of Atwima Mfensi, Isaac Owusu, provided information about the incident to the police. Upon inspection of the scene, the police found both bodies soiled with mud, and blood was found on the face of Vivian Kyei. Mining activities had taken place within a vast portion of the area, and the pit that caved in held volumes of water.

The bodies of the deceased persons have been removed from the pit and deposited at Mount Sinai Mortuary, Tabre, for preservation and autopsy. The Coroner's forms would be prepared for the information of the District Coroner.
