Team Tech Works wins 7th UMaT Innovation and Career Fair 2023

Team Tech Works has emerged winners of the Innovation and Career Fair 2023 organized by the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) under the theme; Think Smart, be Innovative.

The Innovation and Career Fair is an initiative of UMaT to unearth the talents of students in the area of technology. It is an opportunity for students to develop systems with the use of technology to solve problems in society.

This year’s Innovation and career fair which is the 7th edition had ten teams from Esikado and Tarkwa Campuses of the University competing for the first position. However, six of them; teams Tech Works, Radxatech, Oratech, Prodiges, Nextron, and Era made it to the finals.

Each of the Teams was given the platform to showcase their technological prowess and explain to judges how effective and efficient their innovative ideas are and how they will benefit society.

In the end, Team Tech Works who produced an electric-powered wheelchair was adjudged winner of the 7th Innovation and Career Fair.



The wheelchair comes with three controller options; remote, joystick, and smartphone application. It also comes with two mirrors to help the user see what is behind him or her.

A member of the winning Team, Elizabeth Acheampong noted that the electric wheelchair was designed for people with mobility issues to move freely without the help of anyone.

Pro Vice Chancellor of UMaT Prof Anthony Simons congratulated the students for showcasing their innovative ideas to the world. He said the students should update their ideas to an approved standard for acceptability.
He disclosed that the university will create an Innovative TV in order to showcase the innovative ideas of the students to attract investors.

The Guest Speaker, Mr Daniel Ofori, who is Director of Innovations at the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) congratulated UMaT for giving the platform for students to come up with innovative ideas to solve local problems.

He explained that UMaT is situated in a strategic position; a resource-rich part of Ghana, providing an entrepreneurial and innovative support system to students and the general public.
“So if you are a student here, why should be seeking jobs instead of creating jobs”, he quizzed.

While congratulating the teams for the good work, Mr Ofori not that the NEIP is available to train innovators and give financial support to expand their innovations.

Other innovative ideas presented by the students included; Automated Railway System, Universal Industrial System, Smart Farming Technology, Drone Based Surveillance and Threat Detection System, and Current Leakage Detection System among others.
