Defenders Cricket Club and Carel Super Kings (CSK) won their matches during the ongoing Ghana Cricket Association's New Year Invitational league on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at the Achimota Oval C.
Defenders, who were playing their second game, climbed to the top of Group A with four points after defeating Ras Bingi by six wickets in the morning match.
Defenders gave Ras Bingi a good restriction in the first innings, limiting the latter to 78/10 in 17.1 overs after winning the toss and electing to field first.
Captain Sanob Vengali Ravindran, Godfred Bakiweyem, Albin Abraham, and Abhin Ashok V K each took two wickets, with figures of (2-0-9-2), (3.1-1-8-2), (3-0-6-2), and (3-0-21-2).
Defenders got the job done in the second innings, sacrificing four wickets for 83 runs in 12.3 overs.
Godfred Bakiweyem had a good game on the day and was named Player of the Match after scoring 19/33. Bakiweyem was caught by Haruna Addison off the delivery of Emmanuel Eduafo on the 9.4 over, with the Defenders' score at 64/2. Chandrabos Sharon, another teammate, scored 17/23 and was caught by Benjamin Amoah Sampson on the 8.5 over.
Defenders have been consistent so far in their pursuit of their first title following their protest victory over Supreme CC on August 28, 2022.
Later in Group B, Ghana's U-19 Cricket team was defeated by Carel Super Kings by 46 runs in an entertaining match.
The U-19 team, who had their first T20 league test after failing to qualify for the U-19 Cricket World Cup in Abuja last month, won the toss and chose to field first.
CSK scored 146/6 and restricted the U-19s to 103/10 in 17.5 overs, led by Joseph Kwame Theodore (31/33) and Selvaraj Chockalingam (2/3)
Chockalingam had an early rest in the first innings, which lasted 1 hour 49 minutes, after he was caught on the 0.5 over, but Arumugam Captain of the U-19 Team, Paul Ayoleyine was a delight to watch, scoring 35/27 with 4 boundary 4's and was bowled by Joseph Aboagye on the 9.3 over.
He also took two wickets in an over while allowing only three runs (1.0-0-3-2)
However, CSK's Michael Aboagye was named Player of the Match after scoring (2-0-14-2) in addition to his batting performance. CSK's Hariharan Sivagnanam bowled 4.0-0-19-3, keeping the team in second place with 4 points, two behind leaders Don Bruce.
On Sunday, November 6, there will be a Group A match between BGC and MMG in the morning and a Group B match between Punjab IPMC and Swami SC.
(13/25), Michael Aboagye (24/15), and Sam Michael Merbin (33/29) kept CSK in the game.
