Cricket: Hurricanes and Don Bruce pick vital points as New Year Invitational league recommences.

After 6 weeks of absence due to International duties, the Ghana Cricket Association’s New Year Invitational T20 league bounced back with two epic matches in both groups on Sunday, October 16, 2022.


The T20 league saw Hurricanes picking their first 2 points after three outing in Group A, defeating Ras Bingi by 8 wickets on the Achimota Oval C.

Ras Bingi, who were playing their first match since the league begun 9 weeks ago, opted to bat first after winning toss and scored 73/8.

Motivated by Guarav Sharma, who was adjudged Player of the Match, Hurricanes Cricket Club achieved the better of what their opponents did in 13.1 overs, scoring 74/2.

Sharma took 4.0-1-7-2 with an economy rate of 1.7 in the first innings and scored *28(31) with a strike rate of 90.32. Pankaj Gaur took 4.0-1-10-2, whereas Chandrahash Yadav also recorded 4.0-0-10-2 in the bowling figures for the Hurricanes.

Hurricanes Cricket Club, who lost their first match to BGC on August 21, and later lost to MMG on September 11 are now 3rd in Group A with 2 points, 1 behind leaders MMG and same points with BGC (2nd place) and Defenders in 4th place.

Don Bruce however playing their 3rd match remained top of Group B with 6 points as they continued their unbeaten run, in week 4 of the T20 New Year Invitational that was paused for international duties.

Don Bruce’s 3rd victim were Champions United, who were playing their second match after losing to CSK on August 21. Champions United had the opportunity to score in the first innings and produced 141/5 after Don Bruce chose to field first upon winning toss.

It was a great first innings for Champions United, with Aziz Moin Uddin becoming the top batter in the entire game with 47/39.

But Daniel Anefie of Don Bruce was adjudged player of the match, as he scored *30(21) in the second innings which saw his team produced 142/4 in 18.3 overs, winning the game by 6 wickets.

Alex Osei scored 35(32), while Champions United’s Firoj was good in the bowling figures, taking 3-1-7-2.

Group B has only Carel Super Kings with 2 points after Don Bruce, with the likes of Swami Sports and the U-19 Team yet to play their first matches, while Salt n’ Pepper and Punjab are with no points, same as Champions United at the bottom.

Hurricanes and Don Bruce are the only Clubs to have played 3 matches from both Groups and more matches comes up next Sunday (October 23), at the Achimota Cricket Oval C.
