I know that many of you are surprised by this. I mean, it's Cristiano Ronaldo. But after careful consideration and a lot of soul-searching on my part, I'm ready to call him "the goat" (or GOAT for short).

He scored three times for host Portugal as they beat Morocco 2-0 last week and two more times Sunday in their 2-1 quarterfinal win over Uruguay. That took him to 85 goals for Portugal — he has been on the field for just under 10 hours since making his international debut 11 years ago — leaving him just four behind Pele's total of 94 global strikes, which includes 62 goals scored during Brazil's 1958-1970 tenure as world champion (including three unofficial friendlies).
