EC stops accountants from disbursing referendum cash

The Electoral Commission(EC) has issued a directive to its regional offices asking accountants to ‘hold on’ with the disbursement of cash to the various branches nationwide for the December referendum.

This was contained in a circular issued by the deputy chairperson of the commission in charge of operation to staff and sighted by Kasapa News.

Also a scheduled training for officers ahead of the referendum has equally been put on hold.

“I write to request you to kindly hold on to funds meant for Referendum balance Issuers. Regional Directors are required to ensure that this directive is strictly complied with. Please standby for further directives in due cause. Thank, you.

“Regional Directors are kindly requested to inform District Electoral Officers to hold on with the organization of the impending Grassroots Training Workshops scheduled to start from Friday, November 29, 2019 until they have received funds for that purpose,’ the two memos addressed to staff read.

There appears to be a breakdown in consensus on the referendum, particularly after the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) decided to go for a ‘No’ vote.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo, according to government sources is likely to speak in the coming days vis a vis government’s decision on December 17 referendum.
