KMA to clear recalcitrant traders selling on pavements today

Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has indicated effective Monday 17th September 2018, the Assembly will no longer tolerate any act of indiscipline among traders, commercial drivers and illegal transport union’s operators operating in illegal locations in the metropolis.

The warning has become needful after the city nearly recorded a major stampede on Monday 10th September 2018, between Kejetia and Central Market as a results of illegal trading activities going there narrowing human walkways in the central business district.

However, to avoid recurrence of the stampede which saw at least six persons being hospitalized at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital, Mayor of the metropolis Osei Asibbey Antwi has directed the KMA’s taskforce to clear all traders selling on pavement including illegal transport union operating at Komfo Anokye roundabout among other areas.



“I just want to assure all our traders, commercial transport operators and transport unions that, the joint police and KMA’s taskforce is not coming to attack anybody but to enforce law and order in the metropolis. However, recalcitrant traders and commercial drivers will be dealt with in this exercise according to the assembly’s bylaws ’’ he assured.

He warned commercial drivers who have converted Komfo Anokye roundabout as lorry station to cease their operation with immediate effect “I realized formation of illegal lorry station at Komfo Anokye roundabout, when we go after them they run away. But unfortunate for them, last week the assembly’s taskforce and police arrested and prosecuted 12 commercial drivers using Komfo Anokye round about as lorry station to load and off load passengers.

This week we have again 14 of them, we will continue disallow them from operating in the area until they stop their illegal activities” he disclosed.

Meanwhile resident of Kumasi have thrown their weight behind the mayor to free the metropolis from avoidable human and vehicular traffic which is impeding human movement.
