The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders at the ‘Tuesday Market’ a two week ultimatum to go back into their sheds or risk losing them.

Similarly, other persons who engage in activities on the streets around the market had been asked to vacate or face sanctions.

Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive gave the ultimatum when he took his market engagement activities to the Tuesday Market to interact with the traders.

He said the intended decongestion exercise was to pave way for a sustained sanitation drive within the area as well as identify abandoned sheds for re-allocation.

Mr Sowah announced that new sheds would be constructed for traders who travel from villages to trade at the market, adding that, the Assembly would also provide security guards and lights in the market to enhance security.

Madam Naomi Quaye, the Market Queen said the operations of some of the traders was detrimental to the entire market and urged them to go back into their sheds to avoid any consequences.

She said the traders who leave their sheds and occupy the streets because they think the street was more conducive for their businesses “were killing the market,” and urged them to heed to the ultimatum.

The Tuesday Market was established during the colonial era to serve residents of Chorkor, Mamprobi, Korle Gonnon and its environs.

During those day’s traders with food items from rural areas arrived at the market with their goods on Saturdays and starts trading on Mondays, peaking on Tuesday, hence the name Tuesday Market.
