Slavery was a painful tragedy - Mrs Trump ‘breaks down’ in Slave Dungeon tour

Melania Trump, First Lady of the United States of America has said slavery was a tragedy following her visit to the Slave Dungeon in Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana.

Mrs Trump arrived in Ghana for a two-day visit which saw her visit the children’s unit of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital to acquaint herself with strides Ghana has made with regards to child healthcare and possibly find ways of assisting.

But much more intense, even emotional, MyNewsGH.com observed, was Mrs Trump’s tour on Wednesday at the Slave Dungeon in Cape Coast as a tour guide took her through the history of Slavery in the context of the holding facility where former President Obama choked going through various wings, asking questions.

Mrs Trump passed a row of cannons and descended into a dungeon where male slaves were held in chains.

“It’s really, really touching,” she said soberly.

“The dungeons that I saw, it’s really something that people should see and experience, and what happened so many years ago – it’s really a tragedy,” she added.

“This is a very special place… I will never forget the incredible experience and the stories that I heard” she opined.



On Twitter, Mrs Trump updated her followers about what her eyes have seen in Ghana, thanking the Chiefs and people of Cape Coast for hosting her there:

“Day two in #Ghana was so impactful. My visit to Cape Coast castle was a solemn reminder of a time in our history that should never be forgotten. Thank you to Chief Osabarima Kwesi Atta & the chieftains for the warm welcome & cultural ceremony.

Mrs Trump arrived in Ghana today, Tuesday, October 2 for a two-day official visit. She is for the first time visiting four African countries namely Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt in a bid to promote child welfare.

The government of Ghana had said the visit will strengthen ties between the two countries. Ahead of her arrival, the Information Minister-designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah disclosed that her visit will also promote tourism in the country.

“In Ghana, she is focusing on children’s welfare and development primarily because our First Lady is doing a lot of work in maternal health care, so we expect her in town at 10am on the 2nd of October… All in all her visit is expected to boost tourism and Ghana US ties”, he noted.
