Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG), has warned that the fight against illegal mining, or galamsey, will not succeed unless Ghanaians show stronger commitment.
Speaking at the Africa Water Week 2024-Ghana, he criticized the government's lack of political will and the failure of both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to tackle the issue.
Ashigbey emphasized that corruption and the economic benefits of illegal mining were major obstacles. He called for more efforts to enforce laws and protect public health and the environment.
