Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has strongly criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over his recent comments urging Ghanaian Muslims not to vote for Mahama.
Mogtari described Prempeh’s remarks as “unguarded” and cautioned that political discussions should avoid divisive religious

The controversy arose after a video surfaced showing Dr. Prempeh addressing Muslim communities in northern Ghana, where he reportedly suggested that Muslims should favor Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over Mahama, implying that it is “forbidden” for Muslims to vote for a non-Muslim candidate like Mahama.
Speaking during Mahama’s tour of the Central Region, Mogtari denounced Prempeh’s words, saying, “I think he is a loose talker. He needs some coaching and needs to grow up a little bit more. I also think he needs to appreciate the sensibilities of our society.”
Mogtari further criticized Prempeh, known as “Napo,” accusing him of showing “arrogance and ignorance” since his selection as running mate.
“Napo has exhibited enormous arrogance and ignorance since his nomination. I shudder to think what else he is going to be saying next,” she lamented, expressing concerns over the possible impact of his remarks on social cohesion.
Mogtari also questioned Prempeh’s suitability for high office, suggesting that the NPP had not thoroughly vetted his credentials and demeanor before nominating him as running mate.
“It is obvious that he has nothing to offer the NPP. Let’s also try as much as possible to vet the people we nominate for high office,” she added.
