Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has urged Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to contest the Supreme Court's ruling, which annulled Bagbin's declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
In a 5-2 decision led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the court sided with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who argued that Bagbin exceeded his authority by declaring the seats vacant without judicial oversight. The MPs affected—Cynthia Mamle Morrison (Agona West), Kwadwo Asante (Suhum), Peter Kwakye-Ackah (Amenfi Central), and Andrew Asiamah (Fomena)—had switched parties or run as independents ahead of the 2024 elections.
Kpebu believes a challenge could assert parliamentary autonomy and strengthen democratic balance. He argues that unchecked judicial interference may compromise the separation of powers and is calling for constitutional reforms to reinforce judicial independence.
