Former Senior Presidential Aide, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has criticised the Supreme Court’s ruling on the vacation of parliamentary seats for MPs who switch parties.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Aidoo argued that the Court’s decision undermines Parliament’s authority and breaches the separation of powers.
He suggested that the case should have been handled by a tribunal, not the Supreme Court. Aidoo also accused the Court of damaging Ghana’s democracy and failing to interpret the constitution properly.
He called for a purposive approach, which looks at the intent behind constitutional provisions, and criticised the Court for not referencing the Hansard, which records parliamentary debates.
