Vacant seats: Political poison in the judicial system at its peak – Justice Atuguba

Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

He described the decision, which favored Afenyo-Markin, as “predictable” due to the panel’s composition.

Justice Atuguba expressed alarm over increasing political influence in the judiciary, calling it a “constitutional virus” that has peaked under the current administration.

He questioned the exclusion of senior justices from the case, suggesting it undermined judicial impartiality.

The ruling, delivered on November 12, has sparked public debate, with critics warning it could erode trust in Ghana’s legal system and shift focus from justice to political interests.
