Vacant seats case: There is no commonsense in the SC ruling – Sam George

Ningo Prampram MP, Samuel Nartey George, has criticized the Supreme Court's ruling on vacant parliamentary seats, describing it as lacking "common sense and logic."

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points, he argued that the court’s decision failed to uphold basic reasoning.

On November 12, the Supreme Court, in a 5-2 majority decision, ruled that Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant was unconstitutional. The dissenting justices argued that the court lacked jurisdiction in the matter.

The ruling emphasized that a parliamentary seat can only be vacated if a lawmaker switches parties during the same term, not for filing nominations as independent candidates for future elections.
